The Calgarian

Performance, photographed, 2019.

The Calgarian is an alien character created in an effort to find space for itself, inserted in inappropriate or inconvenient times. Like most elusive cryptids, it appears expectedly, in unexpected settings; the local bar, bowling, or maybe searching the skyline for where it might exist.

The mask is hand-sewn from smoked moose hide and painted with acrylic. The wearer is unable to see others or breath very well, creating a physical and emotional barrier between the performer and the unwilling audience. This public performance is generally met with awkwardness and apprehension by the viewers, but the Calgarian does not care. It is only searching for a potential beam to ride home, or where ever it may have left its UFO.
